Los requisitos de un menor consumo de combustible, menor cantidad de sustancias nocivas en los gases de escape y un funcionamiento más silencioso del motor someten a mayores exigencias al motor y al sistema de inyección. Estas exigencias pueden satisfacerse sólo con un sistema de inyección capaz de trabajar con una elevada presión de inyección para conseguir una pulverización fina del combustible por los inyectores, de dosificar con gran exactitud el caudal de inyección, de conseguir un desarrollo exacto de la inyección y de generar procesos de inyección previa y postinyección. El sistema de inyección por acumulador Common Rail es capaz de satisfacer dichos requisitos. A diferencia de otros sistemas de inyección, el combustible está disponible permanentemente para la inyección en un acumulador de alta presión.
